Alsop Architects won an open international competition in 2002 to build the New Arts Complex for Goldsmiths College in London. The Phase One building, also known as the Ben Pimlott Building, was completed in 2005. With an industrial aesthetic that reflects the studio space within, it’s a solid seven storey box clad in metal with punched windows to let in daylight and allow for ventilation. On the building’s south side, a metal surface relief design casts cooling shadows during the day, and industrial light fittings scatter pools of light and shadow across the metal surface at night. The north-facing façade is glazed glass that floods in interior spaces with light, and opens the inner workings of the building to the city. The most eye-catching piece is the roof terrace that’s wrapped in a giant metal architectural scribble that is unmistakable on the London skyline.
